Meet Team derma’s Kai

Posted: 25 June 2021 by Michele Jacobs

Meet Kai Atkinson, our talented and hard working Skin Guru and Educator; so blessed to have him on our Team 💙

What are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my determination and perseverance as an individual. Not just in my career, but within my personal life. The motto “just keep swimming” has never been so true.

Where do you find your motivation?

My motivation comes from being passionate about what I do, that is, living and breathing skin. Motivation comes from within, and is something that cannot be taught.

When do you believe you learnt the most about yourself in your professional career?

I’ve always had a clear vision as to where I wanted to go, but I think for me, surrounding myself with mentors, friends and family that nurture you along the way, really helps to pave and shape you as a human being and the professional direction in which you decide to take. I’ve always been mature for my age, and I use that to my advantage to create positive outcomes and meaningful relationships both personally, and professionally.

Any hidden talents?

Well, I did ballroom dancing for about 12 years and I also like to sing every now and then. To say I don’t know the broadway classic, “Don’t Rain On My Parade,” backwards, would be a lie! This song has definitely had a profound impact on me as a kid, and I think the words in this song really have meaning and have encouraged me to keep on going, and to not put up with s***!

How do you remain so positive when in the eye of the media?

“Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming…” Haha! Honestly, you just have to take a big deep breath, hold your nose and jump. The advice I give to myself is “try not to think about it too much.”

Are setting goals an important aspect for creating success?

I think having a clear direction is important for where you want to go, and yes, setting goals can be a major attribute to success. I’m a doer. I like to please people within reason, and I believe helping others, helps you.

With such a busy lifestyle, how do you have time to eat healthy and stay active?

Haha! Love this. I do my best… can’t always be good. Everything in moderation, right?! I actually have a roommate who used to be a chef so I’m pretty spoilt at home.

How do you deal with the negative aspects of your job?

I’m a massive believer in clear communication. If there is an issue, I approach it with professionalism and grace. It’s important to remain kind during times of stress, as people will always remember HOW you treated them… I also think to myself in times of major stress, is this stress serving me in anyway, and will it matter in 5 years time? Always be kind to yourself, as we are all doing our best with the time and energy we have.

Spotlights

Pinch me moment…The launch of the Hyaluronan NAG Liposomes, and seeing my words come to life in the dermaviduals training manual, was a real pinch me moment!

What I would like to learn…I would like to learn a language… maybe German or Russian!

What I enjoy doing in my spare time…I enjoy long walks, exploring, visiting different places and hanging with friends and family… oh, and I religiously addicted to the TV show “Handmaid’s Tale” on Stan at the moment.

I am proud of…I am proud of how far I have come, and where I am going. Believe and achieve… always.
