Our September Clinic of the Month is Laura’s Skin Management!

Posted: 1 September 2014 by dermaviduals

Laura, owner of Laura’s Skin Management shares her insights into the beauty industry with us.

How long have you been in business and what drew you to the beauty industry in the first place?

I’ve been in skin therapy for about 20 years. I suffered from horrendous acne when I was in my teens up until my early twenties and I can relate to how it impacted my low self-esteem. It’s been a driving force for me to help other people who face the same issues as I really empathise with their situation. That experience set me to thinking that if I could understand the science of skincare, I could improve my own skin condition, scars and share my knowledge to others who may be going through the challenges of adolescence.

What do you value the most in your business?

Results. The most rewarding aspect of my job is knowing that I’ve made a difference in a client’s life by helping them with their skin concerns and see their skin visibly radiate with good health. Seeing the client get on with their lives with increased self-esteem is incredibly rewarding and so is knowing that I’ve made a difference in their quality of life.

How do you find the right balance between your personal and professional life?

I indulge in a massage or foot treatment monthly just to allow me some time out and to completely switch off. Also, I now only work by appointment so it’s become a lot easier to have time out every four months for upskilling my knowledge to just take a week off to enjoy the sunshine. Sometimes, after a particularly busy period, I might take extra time off to spend “me” time.

How has dermaviduals assisted your business?

There are two aspects that I love about dermaviduals. The first is that it is bespoke skincare. That’s very important as clients with problem skin need a dermatology-oriented approach to skincare which can be adjusted to the client’s issues. That means that I can design a skincare plan and products that are specific to a client’s needs and this makes dermaviduals unique. The second is that it is quality backed by science. While it provides more than adequate care for existing problem skin, it also maintains the skin’s natural barrier at an optimal level and prevents the premature skin aging process. dermaviduals is also free of the usual nasties like emulsifiers, preservatives, perfume, mineral oils, silicones, dyes and amines. Also, dermaviduals‘ driven professional staff give their support unconditionally, which really helps.

Being based on the coast has its advantages and disadvantages. What attracts you to this area?

A combination of perfect sunny days, long lunches in shorts and sun frocks, and relaxed tropical evenings nursing drinks with umbrellas. Cairns is very laid-back. I came away to get away from the busy corporate life and it has the perfect combo of a small population, plenty of space and enough hustle and bustle to make life interesting. I do occasionally miss the glitz and glam that comes with big city life, but I can always fly out because Cairns is so accessible.

What keeps you inspired professionally?

I love networking with other like-minded skin therapists. They are usually generous in their experience and knowledge, gleaned from around the world. Their commitment and passion is truly inspiring. Working with industry-driven professionals who are willing to mentor inspires me continue in an industry that is constantly evolving and growing, which in itself inspires me to keep abreast of the industry.

If you had one piece of advice for people considering a career in the beauty industry, what would it be?

Be realistic, true to yourself and be willing to go that extra mile, especially in upskilling yourself. Immerse yourself in learning and keep up to date with research, technology and treatment information. Learn, and never stop growing with education.

New products and equipment enter the beauty industry almost daily. How do you keep up with this and how do you determine what is hype and what is genuine?

Yes, it can be confusing at times because of the marketing hype. You do need to do a great deal of research and identify whether those research findings are credible. Check out the company’s credentials, the ingredients used and the people who endorse the product or machines.
